Dixons Unity Academy launch photography exhibition

Posted 20th June 2025

Earlier this week, we launched a photography exhibition at Armley Library, all created by a talented group of our Year 9 students.

The exhibition is the result of a creative project led by Librarian and Literacy Co-ordinator, Zoe Scott FitzGibbon, and YEP contributor, Ernesto Rogata. Over several weeks, ten students explored their local area on foot, photographing places that matter to them – from everyday streets to hidden corners of Armley that hold deep personal meaning.

Their final images, taken both during the group walks and in their own time, offer a powerful and fresh perspective on the community. Every step of the exhibition, from planning and shooting, to writing captions and curating the display, was led by the students themselves.

The launch event brought together proud families, local residents and community champions to celebrate the students' creativity, confidence and voice. Around 25 people attended to meet the young artists and see Armley through their lens.

Kate Midwood, Senior Librarian for West Leeds, said: “We want to celebrate the local community, so it’s a match made in heaven.”

Sarah Clynes, Vice Principal, Dixons Unity Academy, added: “It’s wonderful to see such positive representations of our local community – there is so much to celebrate about Armley, and these photographs show this expertly.”

The exhibition is open to the public at Armley Library until Monday 30 June 2025 – don’t miss the chance to see Armley as you’ve never seen it before, and to see work from our talented students!
